Pisces is born at the coldest and darkest part of the year, a time when spring is still beyond reach. Nature brushes the landscape in a whole range of winter whites and sparkling, icy blues. Many of life’s other hues are softened and veiled under sheets of frozen ice. Icicles shiver and tinkle

like tiny bells on leafless branches. The silent landscape is barren and perhaps harsh, but there is also a kind of holiness in its spare severity. If the old bear, leaner from months of hibernation, should lumber out of his cave to look for food now, the howling winds may convince him to go

back inside to hunker down a little while longer. Deer, fox, raccoon, and beaver will have a harder time finding nourishment too, but they are not alone. Even humans will note that their provisions are running low. The peaches, apricots, and cherries that were carefully preserved in Bell jars are almost gone by winter’s end. Crops will be plentiful eventually, but not quite yet—for now offerings at the market are fairly thin. Winds are kicking up, suggesting that a new season is well on the way, but for now it is time to wait, rest, reflect, and visualize what should come when the weather softens. Cabin fever will give way to dreaming up images to entertain and humor the spirit, thoughts of fairies dancing on the fresh green lawn of summer or of whole communities of Lilliputians singing and playing on the windowsill. Life inside the mind will always be a source of rich inspiration.

Pisces is the twelfth, and therefore the last, sign of the zodiac, born at the end of the astrologic cycle, a time of limiting portions or even fasting, and a time to ready oneself for an entirely new cycle. Old obligations have to be fulfilled, new goals set, and a general state of readiness put in place. The concept of “less is more” that first emerged in Capricorn resurfaces in Pisces, but in a different, more spiritual way. In Pisces, self-denial is not carried out for earthy practical reasons, as it is in Capricorn (such as to improve one’s appearance or to balance one’s bank account). Instead, self-denial is for deeper ends, to be worthy of redemption and renew a cleansing and purifying the mind, body, and spirit. Most religions suggest the need for limiting food for atonement. No matter what their personal religious beliefs happen to be, there is always a sense in Pisces that life can hold a higher purpose and that finding that purpose is paramount.。

In the Pisces constellation there are two fish swimming in opposite directions; one swims upstream while the other one swims downstream, and they are tied together with a single cord. In Pisces there is always a choice between opposites, whether to follow the high road or the low road, to go with the current or swim against it, or to express the negative charge or the more divine, positive charge. It also suggests the need to reconcile and integrate both the material and the ethereal worlds into one. Pisces are often surprisingly good negotiators, and the most evolved members of the sign are ever cognizant of the need to keep a grip on reality while maintaining their quest for ever higher spirituality. Of course not all Pisces are evolved. There are some Pisces who are too willing to indulge themselves— for surely this is a sign prone to extremes—but these Fish must eventually learn that they need to practice abstinence to purge themselves of the substances that are not good for their mind, body, or spirit.

Some experts feel the glyph of Pisces may possibly be an Egyptian hieroglyph meaning psychic regeneration. The two fishes symbolize the two hemispheres of the brain, and the line or cord that links the two is said to represent the psychic state or the “third eye” that brings Pisces “second sight.”
